About Resveratrol
What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a polyphenol phytoalexin which can be found in red wine, grapes, many berries, dark chocolate and peanuts. Resveratrol’s properties are being studied extensively for its ability to slow down many conditions associated with ageing including alzheimers, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. One such study found that:
1.’It appears that resveratrol can induce the expression of several longevity genes including Sirt1, Sirt3, Sirt4, FoxO1, Foxo3a and PBEF and prevent ageing-related decline in cardiovascular function including cholesterol level and inflammatory response’.
Inflammation plays a major role in the ageing of our cells and it appears that resveratrol may play an important role in reducing this inflammation.
Can’t I just have a glass of red wine a day?
At Happy Healthy Women we would love to think this was true! Unfortunately, despite what wine companies would have you believe, red wine contains fairly low doses of resveratrol. To get the same amount of resveratrol from red wine as you would from Resveratrol Age Defence you would need to drink approximately 35 Litres of wine a day! This makes it clear why a supplement is the best way to get your daily dose of resveratrol.
